Longer Description
WORKSHOP
This graphic design and typography workshop looks at the study and practice of letters, words, and imagery. You’ll learn briefly about some historical, political, and social intent and practice of various type-driven work. Using a variety of tools, from your laptop to you hands, you’ll learn how to convey emotion and function through typography. You might develop a typographic sensibility and voice for something louder, or something quieter, or moments of surprise. You’ll develop a third meaning to the content itself; the first being the intent of the words themselves; the second being its social impact; and the third being your interpretation/creation. Afterwards, you may discover an inclination towards typographic voice and a better understanding the role graphic design has played in social causes.
PROCESS
Choose a social issue that means something to you. Create a type-driven poster that conveys an opinion / stance on this social cause. Choose typefaces or draw custom type/letters, that convey the intent and the feeling of this cause. You can also use the free online typeface tool Metaflop. Throughout the process, use a variety of materials. If you are comfortable with another language, consider making this bilingual. Use quotes of that social cause / movement as your starting point. Convey the meaning of that text through typography. Perhaps it’s a series of layers forming a narrative, each with its own message, but together act as a cohesive whole.
ANIMATE
Separate your layers and create an animated .GIF using either a free online tool such as GIF MAKER, or Photoshop, and make it loop! Can be any size. Submit a .GIF at the end of the class, and if time, we’ll view them all together. Otherwise they can live here, hopefully forever.
